Do you ever have those weeks where literally everything just goes tits up and you can’t focus on anything at all? My brain just isn’t computing life right now, so I decided that I’d just have a little fun today and do a tag (that I, of course, wasn’t tagged in ?)
Anyway, I’m here today with the “Reading Habits” book tag. I’m not entirely sure who created this tag, so let me know and I’ll be sure to credit them here! But I think that’s enough rambling. Let’s just get on with it, shall we? ?
1. do you have a certain place at home that you prefer reading?
I think a lot of people will agree with me when I say that reading whilst curled up in bed, especially during rainy days, is one of the best feelings in the world. There’s just something so cosy about getting under a blanket with a cup of tea and a good book ?
2. do you prefer to use bookmarks or random pieces of paper?
I definitely prefer using bookmarks, but I’ve been known to use random scraps of paper from time to time. I know a lot of people love using fancy bookmarks, but I tend to keep my nice ones on display somewhere, and use the free Book Depository ones when I can, just so I don’t ruin the ones I’ve spent actual money on ?
3. can you stop reading at any point, or do you prefer to wait until the end of a chapter?
It just makes more sense to me to wait until the end of a chapter, and I will admit that long chapters are the absolute bane of my existence. If push comes to shove, I’ll stop at a scene break, but I definitely prefer waiting until the end of a chapter ?
4. do you eat or drink whilst reading?
I’ve noticed lately that I’ve been drinking a LOT more tea whilst reading, and I kind of need to kick that habit. I also tend to snack quite a lot, but I’m definitely not one of those people who can eat their dinner with a book propped in front of them. I need to concentrate on getting food in my mouth, and that’s a lot more difficult when I’m focusing on a book ?
5. can you listen to music or have the tv on in the background whilst reading?
Absolutely not, and I think my boyfriend kind of hates me for it ? I need complete quiet when I’m reading, so I quite often disappear off upstairs and leave him to his TV or music. I wish I could concentrate through background noise, but I’m just way too easily distracted.
6. do you only read one book at a time, or do you have several on the go at once?
I used to exclusively be a one book at a time kinda gal, but over the last couple of years or so, I’ve started occasionally reading a couple at a time, usually if one of the books is a dense fantasy that I need some time to get through. I try not to read multiple books that are new to me, especially if they’re in the same genre, but I love re-reading an old favourite alongside a heavier new-to-me read ?
7. do you only read at home, or do you take your book everywhere?
Once upon a time, I had a job where I could read during the quiet periods (one of the best perks of that job, in my opinion ?). Alas, I no longer have that luxury, and since I don’t really leave the house for anything except work anymore, I pretty much only ever read at home. Besides, I used to be terrified of damaging my books when I was out and about, so it’s just better this way anyway ?
8. do you prefer reading out loud, or silently in your head?
I don’t think I know a single person that prefers reading out loud, but if you’re one of them, you do you. I just think that would be far too distracting for me, though I do wonder if perhaps I’d retain more information that way ? Maybe I’ll try reading a book out loud one day and see what happens.
9. do you prefer breaking the spine of a paperback, or do you have to keep it like new?
I hate broken spines. I hate even the slightest crease in spines. It just bugs me, and I don’t really know why. I guess it’s because when they’re sitting on my shelf, the spine is the only part you see, and it just looks messy. I don’t like things to look messy ? I much prefer hardbacks (both to look at and to read), but if I do end up with a paperback, I try to be as careful as I possibly can.
10. do you write in your books?
Personally, I don’t, but I’m also not one of these people who thinks it’s an act against humanity or whatever. I would love to write in my books, but I don’t have the neatest handwriting in the world (refer back to my hatred of messy things ?). I may start tabbing my books at some point and perhaps I’ll eventually move on to writing in my books, but for now, I’m happy to just keep taking notes on my phone.
So there you have my answers to the “Reading Habits” book tag! Do we have any of the same bookish habits? If you want to play along, consider yourself tagged ? Until next time, happy reading ?
