Book Review // The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

It’s not often that I think 5 stars isn’t a high enough rating, but this book absolutely blew me away. It was just beautiful and heartbreaking and so unbelievably thought-provoking. There just aren’t enough words to describe how much I loved this story. V.E. Schwab has truly outdone herself and I can’t thank her enough for bringing Addie LaRue into my life 🥰

The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Pub. 2020 | Fantasy

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever-and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore, and he remembers her name.

When it comes to really making you feel something for her characters, V.E. Schwab is a master. Addie LaRue will stay in my mind and in my heart for a long time, and I’m not even going to pretend that I don’t well up every time I think about her story. You can really see how much love and care Schwab took crafting this story, and the fact that she’s poured so much of her soul into creating this amazing piece of literature makes this book feel like a truly personal experience. I can’t imagine how terrifying it was for Schwab to finally put this story out into the world, but I respect the hell out of her for it, that’s for sure.

This book strolls by at such a leisurely pace and I know a lot of people have struggled with that. These pages aren’t filled with suspense and conflict, so if you’re someone who needs explosive twists and a propulsive storyline, this book may not be for you. However, if you adore character driven stories and poignant moments, I highly recommend you check this book out. I don’t want to say too much about anything because I truly believe that going into this story knowing as little as possible is the best way. The characters, the writing, the way V.E. Schwab has created such a unique and emotional experience for each of her readers… it truly is an incredible feat.

If you’ve ever felt unsure about what you want from life, if you’ve ever wondered if something is wrong with you, if you’ve ever felt like a disappointment to the people around you, just remember that you are not alone. This is a story about the search for someone who sees you. The real you. Someone who sees past your barriers, who loves you unconditionally, and fights everyday to prove to you that you. are. enough. It’s about loneliness and sacrifice and the basic human need to be remembered.  I’m not going to lie, it’s a lot to take. This book will hit you in feelings you didn’t even realise you felt. But more importantly, it will make you realise that the hopelessness you feel is temporary. You just have to keep searching.
