Okay, so. I’m sure many of you can relate to this, but I have a lot of unread books sitting on my shelves. Some of them I’m not so sure about anymore, and others I just know I’m going to love. Today, I want to talk a little bit about the latter group ?
Without going too in-depth into my personal rating system, it’s hard to explain what elevates a book to that highest rating, but I’ll try my best to summarise ? Basically, if a book has a good balance of plot, character development, and worldbuilding, the writing meshes well with me, and I can see myself re-reading it in the future, I’m more likely to give it a stellar rating. Those things don’t guarantee 5 stars, but the final factor is just a feeling, one that resonates with me when I finish a book ? Like I said, it’s difficult to explain, and that’s not really the point of this post anyway ?
Today I wanted to talk about the books that are sitting on my shelves, waiting to be read, that I think have the potential to be 5 star books for me. Whether it’s the premise, the author, or the hype, here are the 5 books (not including sequels) on my TBR that I think could end up as new favourites for me!
THE WRATH & THE DAWN BY RENÉE AHDIEH
Despite The Beautiful being one of my favourite reads of 2019, I had some major issues with its sequel, The Damned. In all honesty, that experience has made me a little wary of Renée Ahdieh, and I’m worried that she’s going to be a bit of a hit or miss author for me. That being said, this Arabian Nights inspired tale has received some absolutely stellar reviews, and I do still think it will end up as a new favourite for me. As far as I’m aware, this is about a teenage Caliph who takes a new bride every night, only to have killed her by sunrise, and a girl who vows to stop his reign of terror. It sounds fascinating, and I can’t wait to read this duology at some point this year!
ROAR BY CORA CARMACK
I don’t really hear a lot of people talking about this series, but what I have heard has been almost exclusively positive. This sounds like a great start to a YA fantasy series, and I’m excited to dive into this world at some point soon. I have a feeling there’s going to be a great romance for me to devour, as well as a fascinating magic system, and interesting characters to fall in love with. I honestly don’t know anything about this book, but something about it just screams that it’s going to be a new favourite ?
SKYWARD BY BRANDON SANDERSON
Science fiction is something that is extremely hit or miss for me, and the fact that this is Brandon Sanderson writing YA also kind of worries me for some reason ? Despite my misgivings, however, this book has had a lot of positive buzz since it was released. Skyward tells the story of Spensa, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a world that has been under attack for decades. She’s longed to be a pilot since she was a young child, and when she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she takes it upon herself to repair it and provide a way to make her dreams come true. Everybody who reads this book seems to absolutely adore Spensa, and honestly? She’s kind of the reason why I think this will end up a new favourite for me ?
JADE CITY BY FONDA LEE
What’s kind of funny about this particular book is that I actually picked my copy up early last year for about £2 in a charity shop. I’d never heard of it before, but the premise sounded intriguing so I figured I’d at least give it a good home, even if I never read it. And then, all of a sudden, everybody seemed to start talking about this book towards the latter end of last year. The more I hear about this book, the more I’m convinced I’m going to absolutely love it. I don’t really know what it’s about, but I do know that it’s a Godfather-esque story of blood feuds, magic, and politics, and I don’t really need to know much more than that, to be honest ? It sounds gripping, and unique, and I just can’t wait.
THE BETRAYALS BY BRIDGET COLLINS
The Binding was one of those books that just kind of sneaks up on you. You read it because it’s there and it sounds interesting, but you don’t have super high expectations for whatever reason. And then you read it, and it blows you away. I absolutely loved Bridget Collins’s first novel, and if the writing in The Betrayals is even half as beautiful, I know this will also become a favourite for me. I don’t know anything about this book other than that it’s a historical fiction (possibly with a hint of magic if The Binding is anything to go by), and I kind of want to keep it that way. I just want to experience the beautiful writing and the immersive world that I know Bridget Collins can create. Also, can we just take a second to appreciate how unbelievably stunning the cover of this book is! I can’t get enough ?
So there you have 5 books on my TBR that I think could be new favourites for me! I may make a sequel to this post in the future as there are several more that could make it onto this list, so let me know if you want another post like this ? Have you read any of these books? What did you think? Until next time, happy reading ?
